How successful we are at anything we do in life is determined by how well we learn to do that thing. While we may know how important it is to learn, and we seek curriculum and instruction that guides us through what we need to learn, the real power is in how we learn.
According to Elizabeth and Robert Bjork, cognitive researchers at UCLA, “Learning how to learn is the ultimate survival tool,” and I’d suggest it is the ultimate success tool as well.
All successful learning includes certain elements no matter the discipline — from math and science to music and football, from theater to software development to foreign language. All learning relies on the same neurological processes. Any successful teaching makes use of at least some of these processes as we cannot learn without them. Great teaching includes most of them.
